For most of the 19th century, British railways ran on incompatible track gauges. Goods had to be unloaded and reloaded at every regional border, until a common gauge unlocked the network. NHS data faces a similar challenge. Although years of work across the NHS has gone into producing standards that could help data flow — they've sat scattered across different teams, sites and documents. And a standard only delivers value when it's actually used.
The NHS Standards Directory pulls them together in one place: somewhere to find standards, understand how to apply them, develop new ones, and spot duplication that can be stripped out to make health and care more efficient. Today, it supports more than 8,000 users and hosts over 350 information standards, helping to build robust data foundations across the NHS.

The Challenge
Prior to working with MetadataWorks, the NHS England team used CKAN tooling, which they found to be limited in flexibility and difficult to tailor to the evolving needs of a complex health and care ecosystem.
